The Ocala Film Foundation (OFF), Ocala’s premiere cinematic arts organization, is announcing the launch of a new series of independent films to be screened at the Marion Theatre one Sunday a month throughout the fall and spring. “Cinema Sunday” is designed to be a cinematic experience showcasing art, culture, & diversity from some of today’s most gripping independent film-makers.
OFF was selected by South Arts and the Southern Circuit, as one of only five Screening Partners in the state of Florida to take part in the Tour of Independent Filmmakers. The Southern Circuit is about connecting audiences and film-makers in a communal experience. The tour pushes back against the growth of solitary viewings. Teresa Hollingsworth, program director for South Arts, explains, “Our increased access to independent film through streaming services on TV and mobile devices is amazing. However, watching a film together as an audience and having a chance to collectively discuss it with the film-maker is a fundamentally different experience. Come out; see a film; meet a film-maker!” Each of the monthly programs in the “Cinema Sunday” series includes both a Close-up and Conversation event, which gives the audience an opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the film- maker before and after the screening of the film. The Close-up is an educational program designed for those interested in learning about the process of filmmaking, while the Conversation is a post-screening cocktail party where attendees can speak directly with the film-maker; further exploring the content of their film and / or their work within the industry. “We are passionate about connecting film-makers with communities,” said Hollingsworth. “Film and media artists are at the forefront of countless important conversations. Their ability to develop thematically resonant work and tell stories opens audiences’ eyes and ears to new concepts and ideas.” “We are excited to bring these engaging films and their film-makers to our community,” says Angie Lewis, Chairman of the Ocala Film Foundation Board of Directors. “We have a selection of eclectic films to screen here that we feel reflects the growing diversity in our local community; as well as broader, far-reaching issues that concern each and every American, Floridian, and Ocalan.” All screenings will be held at the Ocala Marion Theatre at 3:30pm, starting on September 16th and continuing once a month through April.
